Waterbury Republican-American: College record-setter

In advance of this weekend's Northeast-10 Championships, Waterbury Republican-American sportswriter Mark Jaffee caught up with Bentley All-America Amy Varsell.  Here's the article, which appeared in the April 30 edition of the newspaper and on the newspaper's website at www.rep-am.com.

Of all the accolades, titles and races won over the past dozen years by track star Amy Varsell, one moment stands out. "When I was 9 years old, I competed in the 50- and 100meter dashes at the Hershey Track and Field competition at Lewis Mills High, and won my age group," said Varsell. "I still have those ribbons. I love those ribbons."

Little did Varsell know but that first race, thanks to her parents registering her after seeing the race notice in a Burlington Park and Recreation newsletter, would be the springboard to a spectacular cross country, indoor and outdoor track career.

Her competitive nature kicked in first at Har-Bur School, then Lewis Mills, where she was a four-time 400-meter Berkshire League champion and a three-time state champion, and for the past three years at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., where she holds a halfdozen school records.
