Northeast-10 Track Championships on Tap with Varsell & Maguire Topping Bentley’s Entrants

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University men's and women's outdoor track teams will be at Southern Connecticut State in New Haven, Conn. Friday and Saturday for the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Friday's action gets underway at 3:30 pm, and Saturday's first event is at 11 am.

Eleven different Falcons enter the championships ranked in the top six of their respective events, with junior All-America Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) at the top of the list of qualifiers. The three-time Northeast-10 champion is the top qualifier in both the 800 meters and the 1500 as she plans on competing in both on Saturday.

Varsell's 1500 qualifying time of 4:30.17, a school record set Sunday at Brown, is more than four seconds faster than the number two qualifier, and her 2:10.41 in the 800 is a meet-best by about 2.6 seconds.  Also in the 800, Falcon junior Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS) is fifth on the qualifying list at 2:15.61.

The top qualifier on the men's side is junior Sean Maguire (Essex, Vt./Essex HS) in the 5,000. He's number two on the list after placing fifth in the event at the indoor championships. Also in the 5,000, senior Tom Witherell (Los Alamos, N.M./Los Alamos HS) is the number five qualifier. Indoors, he was sixth, right behind Maguire.

Junior Craig Robinson (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough HS) has the fourth best qualifying time in the steeplechase, and senior Gabe Campbell (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury HS) is fifth in the 10,000. The entry list in the women's 10K includes Falcon sophomore Ashley Nichols (Kenmore, Wash./ Inglemoor HS). It'll be her first collegiate race at that distance for Nichols, who was third in the 5,000 indoors.

Five Bentley freshmen rank in the top six in field events. Jackie Carlson (Kensington, Conn./ Berlin HS) is fifth in the javelin while Brynnan Farrington (Shirley/Ayer HS) (shot put), Tatiana Froehlich (Newton/Newton North HS) (discus), Nikos Devletoglou (Athens, Greece) (high jump) and Anthony Charter (Hubbardston/Quabbin Reg. HS) (triple jump) all rank sixth in their respective events.
