Varsell Breaks School Record in 1500 at Princeton; Falcons Set 5 PRs at MIT

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Just 18 hours after posting the second fastest outdoor 800-meter time of her career, Bentley University junior Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) broke a 19-year-old school record in the 1500 meters during the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University's Weaver Track Saturday.

Varsell's time of 4:31.40 bettered the record that Bentley Hall of Famer Suzy Walsh had owned since 1993 by more than two-and-a-half seconds.  She placed second among 47 runners, predominantly from track clubs and Division I institutions, and trailed only Brooke Kott of East Carolina (4:27.49).

Varsell's time was an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier and the 14th best recorded by a Division II athlete this year.

The rest of the Bentley women's track and field team competed in the MIT Invitational at the Henry Steinbrenner Stadium, with at least five new personal bests set during the meet.

Two of those were recorded by junior Andrea Crowley (Bourne/Bourne HS). She was sixth of 17 in the 100 with her time of 13.36 a career best, and she also established a new PR with a time of 27.79 in the 200.  Also improving on her PR in the 200 was senior Natalie Caldwell (Greenbrae, Calif./Redwood HS) with a time of 27.66. Caldwell and Crowley were 11th and 13th respectively, in a field of 30.

Bentley's highest individual finishes were posted by senior Evelyn Marrero (Amsterdam, N.Y./ Amsterdam HS) and freshman Brynnan Farrington (Shirley/Ayer HS). Marrero was second of nine in the 5,000 in 19:17.17, two places in front of sophomore teammate Leah Schiller (Tipp City, Ohio/ Tippecanoe HS) (20:00.13), and Farrington was third of 15 in the shot with a throw of 37 feet, one-half inch.

Freshman Tatiana Froehlich (Newton/Newton North HS) was fifth of 18 in the discus, throwing it 111 feet, 10 inches to set a new personal best and move to number five on Bentley's all-time list. Jackie Carlson (Kensington, Conn./Berlin HS), also a freshman, was fifth of 10 in the javelin, with a distance of 95 feet, two inches.

Bentley junior Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS) set a new PR of 1:01.58 while finishing eight of 15 in the 400 meters.

Next Sunday, the Falcons will compete in the Brown Springtime Invitational, the team's final non-championship meet of the year.
