Varsell Runs to Victory in 800 at Skyhawk Invitational

EASTON, Mass. – Bentley University junior and three-time All-America Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) wasn't threatened en route to a victory in the 800 meters at the Skyhawk Invitational, held Saturday at Stonehill College's W.B. Mason Stadium.

Varsell, the indoor New England champion in the event, reached the finish line in 2:13.16, breaking the tape more than three seconds before runner-up Sarah Wilson of Stonehill.

The only other Bentley veteran to score in the meet was sophomore Delia Equitz (Sussex, Wisc./Arrowhead Union HS), who was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles. Her time of 1:10.32 improved on her previous career best by 0.59 seconds and moved her from seventh to sixth on Bentley's all-time list.

Four Bentley freshmen contributed points in the meet with two of those, Brynnan Farrington (Shirley/Ayer HS) and Jackie Carlson (Kensington, Conn./Berlin HS), climbing on the program's all-time performance list. Carlson was third in the javelin with her throw of 104 feet, 11 inches moving her to fifth all-time, and Farrington's heave of 37 feet, 9.25 inches placed her sixth in the meet and third in Bentley history.

Vanessa Wegner (Westborough/Westborough HS) set a new PR (1:01.37) while finishing fifth in the 400, and Tatiana Froehlich (Newton/Newton North HS) was seventh in the discus (100'8").

The team standings had Bentley seventh among 10 teams with 33 points. Tufts University topped the list with 206.5, and Stonehill was third at 175.

Bentley will have split squads next weekend with the team competing in both the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University and the MIT Invitational.
