Varsell Provisionally Qualifies for NCAAs in 800

RALEIGH, N.C. – Three weeks after placing third in the 800 meters at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships, Bentley University junior All-America Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) provisionally qualified for the event outdoors with a strong showing Saturday afternoon during the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State.

Varsell finished the 800 invitational in 2:11.74, tying for the fourth fastest by a Division II woman thus far during the outdoor season. She was 15th of 25 overall, with 13 of the 14 runners in front of her from Division I institutions. Her time was just 0.67 seconds off the school record she set at the nationals last May.

Other members of the Bentley team competed in the Tufts Snowflake Classic Saturday, with one of the best efforts turned in by sophomore Aubrey Batzinger (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall). She was seventh of 51 in the discus with a throw of 106 feet, 5.75 inches.

Delia Equitz (Sussex, Wisc./Arrowhead Union HS), also a sophomore, was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:13.34. She also combined with sophomore Kristen Reichlen (Boxborough/Acton-Boxborough Reg. HS), junior Andrea Crowley (Bourne, Mass./Bourne HS) and seniors Natalie Caldwell (Greenbrae, Calif./Redwood HS) for seventh place in the 4x100 relay (53.53 seconds).

Caldwell also set a new personal best in the 200 (27.89 seconds) and freshman Brynnan Farrington (Shirley, Mass./Ayer HS) moved to fourth on Bentley's all-time list in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 3 inches.

Next Saturday, Bentley will compete in the George Davis Invitational at UMass-Lowell.
