Bentley Surges in Singles in 5-3 Defeat of Merrimack in Northeast-10 Quarterfinals

WALTHAM, Mass. – No. 4 seed Bentley University won four of five finished singles matches to surge past No. 5 seed Merrimack to a 5-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Championship on Tuesday afternoon.

The Falcons trailed after the doubles matches 2-1, and at one point trailed 3-1 after Merrimack won the No. 1 singles match. But Bentley won the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches to post a 5-3 victory, and book a spot in Friday's semifinals against top seed Stonehill.

In doubles, Merrimack won the match's first point, as its No. 1 doubles team of Grace Messina and Mana Seifaei won it 8-4. The No. 2 and No. 3 matches then finished just minutes apart. Bentley won the No. 3 match behind Corrie MacLean (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS) and Tiffany Suchanek (Waterville, Maine/Waterville HS) 9-7. But the Warriors still led 2-1 going into the singles matches.

The visitors extended their lead to 3-1, when Messina finished a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 match. But Bentley surged ahead with wins in the other matches.

Sophomore Hannah Fabianski (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington HS) posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory in No. 2 singles. Freshman Katie Tynan (West Barnstable/Barnstable HS) defeated Danielle Dunn 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. Senior Susan Stowe (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) cruised past Mackenzie Blair, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 match, and junior Katie Brandow (East Northport, N.Y./Northport HS) defeated Mia Briggs by the same score in the No. 6 match.

The victory improved Bentley's record to 9-4. The Falcons and Skyhawks last met in the season-opener back on Sept. 9.
