Bentley Sweeps Saint Rose 9-0 to Open Spring Season

HAVERHILL, Mass. – Led by two players that won in both singles and doubles, the Bentley women's tennis team got its spring season off to a winning start by sweeping Saint Rose 9-0 in a Northeast-10 match Saturday afternoon at the Cedardale Athletic Club.

The victory gives new Bentley tennis head coach Rick Edelmann his first win with the Falcons. The double winners for Bentley on the day were sophomore Ludmila Yamus (Deer Park, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) and freshman Rachel Petrini (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand).

Yamus and Petrini first combined to win in the number one doubles match, beating Gabriella Pizzanelli and Paige Southwick 8-1. The other winners for Bentley in doubles were junior Melanie Scott (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) and sophomore Lexie Hinrichs (Franklin, Mass./Ursuline Academy) in number two doubles. They defeated Megan Stacklum and Alyssa Haddad 8-0.

In singles Yamus was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in the number one match over Southwick. Sophomore Catherine Gianino (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) defeated Pizzanelli 6-2, 6-0 in the second-flight, while Petrini knocked off Maggie Moran 6-0, 6-1 in the third-flight. In fourth-flight singles, sophomore Brittani Hetyei (Vernon, N.J./Vernon) bested Stacklum 6-1, 6-0, and sophomore Maria Ruiz (Santo Domingo,DR/The Americas School) blanked Haddad 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth-flight.

The Falcons improve their record to 5-0 both overall and in the NE-10 with the win. They return to the courts on March 8 against Saint Thomas Aquinas.
