McGahie & Niemiec Post Wins During Day 2 of Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Kaitlin McGahie (Boylston/Tahanto Reg. HS) and junior Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Mahoney HS) posted wins for the Bentley University women's swimming and diving team Saturday night during the second day of the Gompei Invitational at WPI.

McGahie broke her own school record while winning the 100 yard individual medley in 1:00.33, an improvement of 0.37 seconds over the mark she set at the same meet a year ago. It was a nail-biter as she just edged Assumption's Morgan Nicholls by two-hundredths of a second.

Niemiec shared first place in the 200 IM with Assumption's Niamh Morgan with both touching in 2:10.02.

Each also finished high in another event while also swimming two relays. McGahie was fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.76) and Niemiec took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.07).

In the 400 medley relay, Bentley finished fourth in 4:01.26 with McGahie and Niemiec joined by sophomores Kate Kaduboski (Dedham/Dedham HS) and Melissa Viator (Lubbock, Texas/Lubbock HS).  McGahie, Niemiec and Kaduboski also teamed with senior Nicole Hellstern (Southbury, Conn./ Pomperaug HS) to place eighth in the 200 free relay (1:40.03).

Kaduboski and Viator both turned in top five performances in the 200 backstroke, finishing third and fifth, respectively. Kaduboski finished in 2:07.48 and Viator turned in a 2:08.38.

In the combined team scores, which includes both men's and women's results, Bentley is fifth among 13 teams with 1,600.5 points. WPI has a commanding lead with 3,040, nearly 600 more than second-place Rowan University.

The three-day meet will conclude Sunday with prelims at 8:30 and finals at 4:30 pm.
