McGahie Swims to Victory in 50 Breaststroke; Bentley Finishes 6th in Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. – Competing only about 12 miles from her hometown, Bentley University junior Kaitlin McGahie (Boylston/Tahanto Regional HS) turned in another strong performance Sunday, including a victory in the 50 yard breaststroke, as the Gompei Invitational concluded at WPI.

McGahie, who twice broke the school record in the 100 individual medley on Saturday, swam the 50 breaststroke in 31.30 seconds to beat Roger Williams' Hailey Martel by just over a quarter of a second.

McGahie's day also included a fourth in the 200 freestyle (28.55), a fifth in the 100 free (1:51.32) and two fifth-place finishes in relays. She combined with sophomore Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney HS) and a pair of freshmen,  Kate Kaduboski (Dedham/ Dedham HS) and Melissa Viator (Lubbock, Texas/Lubbock HS) for a 1:51.32 in the 200 medley and with Kaduboski, Niemiec and freshman Hannah Rauch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) for a 3:38.53 in the 400 free.

Niemiec also had a strong meet with her Sunday finishes including a second in the 200 breaststroke (2:28.10) and a third in the 400 individual medley (4:36.34). Kaduboski was fourth in the 50 backstroke (28.55), sixth in the 100 back (1:01.12) and eighth in the 400 IM (4:36.34).

In the one-meter diving, senior Nicola Mancini (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth HS) placed fourth with a 389.20 and classmate Courtney Stone (Andover/Andover HS) took seventh (372.05).

Bentley also received an eighth in the 100 back from Viator (1:01.55) and a tenth from sophomore Anne Warren (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron School) in the 200 butterfly (2:29.18).

In the team standings, Bentley finished in the middle, sixth of 11 with 1538.5 points. Assumption College edged Bryant University for the championship, 2826.5-2783.5.

Bentley will finish the first semester portion of the schedule Saturday at home against Norwich University (1:00 pm).
