Bentley Falls to Saint Rose in NE10 Semis 3-2

Albany, N.Y. – Two second half goals were the difference as No. 1 seed Saint Rose defeated the No. 4 seed Bentley 3-2 on Thursday in the semifinals on the NE10 Women's Soccer Championship.

The game was tied 1-1 at halftime, as a goal by Bentley's Marissa Burns (Hudson, N.H./Bishop Guertin) in the 26th minute cancelled out a Saint Rose goal in the 1st minute. But the Golden Knights, ranked 11th nationally, took the lead in the 57th minute, then added to its lead with a goal in the 74th minute for a 3-1 margin.

Bentley pulled a goal back in the 78th minute when sophomore Dana Goulet (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) scored off a corner kick, but they could not find the equalizer in the remaining time.

Bentley (10-7-2) though will have a chance to continue its season as they were ranked 5th in the NCAA East Region this week. The defeat snapped an eight game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) for the Falcons, which began back on Oct. 11.

After Saint Rose took a 1-0 lead early on, Bentley battled back and got the tying goal from Burns. A Saint Rose foul set up Bentley to take a free kick from about 40 yards out. The kick was sent in to the penalty area and pinged around, before Burns jumped on it to get off a shot from 15 yards out for the goal.

The match went into halftime tied 1-1 and with Bentley having a 7-5 advantage in shots.

In the 2nd half, the Golden Knights went up 2-1 in the 57th minute when sophomore Theresa Durle scored off a corner kick that was sent in from the right corner. The hosts then made it 3-1 when the NE10's Player of the Year Nina Predanic scored in the 74th minute.

Bentley though did not go down easily, as just under four minutes later they made it a one goal game again when Goulet scored off a corner. Junior Keegan Castles (Leominster, Mass./Nashoba) sent the kick in from the right corner to the far post, and as the ball landed in the six yard box Goulet stabbed it past keeper Marika Laurendeau for the goal.

Bentley had a chance for an equalizer with about 30 seconds left when Goulet fed a cross for Emma Guccione (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) from the left to the far post, but Laurendeau came out to claim it before Guccione could get a touch on it.

Saint Rose (16-2-1) advances on to the NE10 finals on Sunday against Southern Connecticut.
