Gizzi’s Goal Sees Bentley Top Southern Conn 1-0

Waltham, Mass. – Sophomore center back Chloe Gizzi (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) scored on a free kick in the 67th minute to help the Bentley women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut on Saturday to secure a big three points.

A Southern Conn foul led to the free kick opportunity for Bentley. Gizzi took the kick from about 40 yards out on the right side of the field and sent it into the 18 yard box, took a deflection and ended up in the back of the net to give Bentley a 1-0 lead with about 23 minutes remaining.

That proved to be the game's only goal as the Falcons secured the win, which improved their Northeast-10 record 3-5-2 for 11 points. The Owls came into the game with 21 points and tied for fourth place.

Bentley had the best scoring chance of a first half that ended 0-0 in the 36th minute. Left back Sammy Millmann (Northport, N.Y./Northport) played a long diagonal pass from about 35 yards out into the six yard box that junior Kelly Donlon (Meriden, Conn.) got on the end of, but her shot went just wide.

Prior to Gizzi's goal, both teams had scoring chances. Bentley's Stephanie Helin (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) saw shot go just wide in the 61st minute, and Southern's Meaghan Kelley had a shot go just wide in the 64th minute.

Bentley will now go for its second straight win on Tuesday night when they visit Pace.
