Southern N.H Advances Past Bentley 2-0 in NE10 Quarters

MANCHESTER, N.H. – A goal in each half was enough to see No. 2 seed Southern N.H. advance past No. 7 seed Bentley 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Women's Soccer Championship on Tuesday afternoon.

The Penmen jumped in front early as senior forward Abigail Maker scored in the 8th minute after she headed in a long cross that was sent in by freshman Reanna Romano.

Bentley got off six shots in the opening half in search of the tying goal, and a shot by senior Peyton Kent (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) in the 21st minute forced a save out of SNHU keeper Paige Salmon. Bentley also had five corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.

The Penmen kept Bentley keeper Kat Hassapis (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) busy in the first half, but she came up with five saves to keep the deficit at 1-0 at halftime.

Early in the 2nd half, Hassapis denited a shot by Romano, and about five minutes later Kent had a another shot stopped by Salmon. On the next possession down the field, Hassapis made a save off a shot by forward Trisha Luis.

In the 59th minute, Hasspais stopped two shots in quick succession by Maker and Courtney Benson to keep the score 1-0.

Southern broke through with its second goal in the 86th minute when Luis headed in a rebound for a 2-0 lead with about five minutes remaining.

With the win, the Penmen advanced on to Friday's semifinal, where they will face the winner of tonight's game between Saint Rose and Assumption. Bentley's season comes to a close at 8-8-1.
