Bentley Books Ticket to NE10 Playoffs with 2-1 OT Win over New Haven

WALTHAM, Mass. – A 2-1 overtime win by the Bentley women's soccer team clinched its place in the 2017 Northeast-10 playoffs on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Kelly Donlon (Meriden, Conn./Francis Maloney) scored the winning goal 6:52 into the first overtime.

Bentley needed a win to clinch a playoff spot directly, while a tie or loss would have required the help of other teams to get them in. Donlon's goal delivered the win and ensured the season will continue in the NE10 postseason

The Falcons will be either the 7th or 8th seed, depending on Le Moyne's result against Pace tonight. As the 7th seed, Bentley would play either Southern New Hampshire or Saint Rose. As the 8th seed, they would play Adelphi. The quarterfinal round gets underway on Tuesday.

Sophomore Stephanie Helin (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) helped get the winning goal started. She dribbled into the penalty area, and dropped off a pass to Donlon, who was making a run down the right side. Donlon ran onto the pass, and finished with a low shot to the far post that rolled in to give Bentley the 2-1 win.

It was Helin's goal in the 51st minute that brought Bentley back from a 1-0 deficit after New Haven scored the game's first goal.

Helin won a loose ball in Bentley's attacking area from the New Haven defense and dribbled in the box. As the New Haven keeper approached, she got off a shot from 10 yards past the keeper's outstretched arms to tie the match 1-1.

New Haven had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half, despite Bentley owning an 8-4 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes. Midfielder Kelly Quigley finished off a pass from Tana Tufts to give the Chargers the lead in the 26th minute.

With the win, Bentley finished the regular season with an 8-7-1 overall record, and 6-7-1 in the NE10.
