Bentley Secures Big 1-0 Win over Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – Bentley secured a big three points in its chase for the Northeast-10 playoffs with a 1-0 win over Stonehill on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior midfielder Carly Kohler (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) was the goal scorer, as the Falcons moved closer to the NE10 playoffs. Entering the game, Bentley was two points behind both Le Moyne and Stonehill for the last two playoff spots. Today's win moved them ahead of the Skyhawks, 16 points to 15, for the 8th and final spot. Le Moyne is in 7th now with 18 points.

Kohler scored off an indirect free kick in the 59th minute from about 15 yards away. With the Stonehill wall to her left, she drilled her kick off the crossbar and into the upper right corner of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Junior Stephanie Helin (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) had the assist.

Bentley nearly made it 2-0 a few minutes later in the 66th minute. A corner kick from freshman Emma Guccione (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) came to the feet of McKenna Hiller (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe), who got off a shot that was headed for the back of the net, only for it to be blocked by a Stonehill defender.

On the same possession, another corner kick by Guccione saw Kohler send a header wide.

Stonehill had a chance to tie in the 83rd minute when loose ball in the penalty area was turned into a shot from close range by Taylor Shannahan, but Bentley keeper Kat Hassapis (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) corralled the save. Hassapis came up with another save in the 85th minute on a shot in the penalty area by Madalyn Fernbach through traffic.

Bentley was then able to see out the rest of the game to secure the three points.

The Falcons are now 5-7-1 on the season in NE10 games. Saturday is the final day of the regular season in the NE10. Bentley hosts New Haven at 11 am with a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a win.
