Bentley Drops Season Finale to Southern Connecticut

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite a tying goal by sophomore Brandi McDonald (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS), Bentley dropped the final game of its regular season to Southern Connecticut 2-1 on Saturday.

The defeat, combined with a win by Southern New Hampshire and a tie by Assumption, kept Bentley out of the Northeast-10 playoffs.

Southern Connecticut jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute on a goal by Victoria Buonanni. She made a run down the left wing and cut into the penalty area, where she uncorked a shot from 10 yards out that found its way to the far post to give the Owls an early advantage.

Just after halftime though, Bentley responded on McDonald's 3rd goal of the season in the 48th minute. She had space to shoot, and unleashed a blast from 30 yards out to the upper right corner of the net that left Southern goalie Gabrielle Arruda no chance.

Southern though went ahead 2-1 in the 61st minute on a goal by Caroline Staudle. The goal came on the 3rd straight corner kick on the same possession by the Owls, and was delivered in the box by Meaghan Howard. The ball bounced across the goal line, and Staudle ran onto it, and headed it into the back of the net.

Bentley had a chance late to equalize, but the Owls were able to hang on for the win.

The Falcons ended their season with a 9-6-2 overall record and 6-6-2 Northeast-10.
