WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior forward Peyton Kent (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) scored with just 19 seconds left in the 2nd overtime as the Bentley women's soccer team took a big step towards qualifying for the Northeast-10 playoffs with a 2-1 win over AIC on Wednesday.
The victory gives the Falcons 20 points heading into the final day of the regular season on Saturday. With the standings so tightly bunched, seven teams have between 21 and 19 points, the Falcons will still likely need at least a tie against Southern Connecticut on Saturday to book their ticket for the postseason.
Kent's goal came deep into the 2nd overtime when the match looked headed for a 1-1 draw against the Yellow Jackets, who came into the day in 2nd place in the conference.
With the ball in Bentley's offensive zone but outside of the penalty area, freshman Stephanie Helin (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic HS) fed short pass to Kent. With room to shoot, Kent chipped a shot from 25 yards away that went over AIC's goalie's head and into the back of the net for the dramatic win.
Despite AIC holding a large edge in shots, Bentley was in the game thanks to solid goalkeeping from Deirdre Macrorie (Winchester/Winchester HS) and a spectacular free kick goal from freshman Riane Hunt (Millis/Millis HS) in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets very nearly won it with 25 seconds left in the first overtime when Stephanie Tweer had a shot on the doorstep of the goal, only for Macrorie to make a brilliant diving save to keep the match tied.
AIC took the lead in the 32nd minute when forward Johanna Englund scored off the rebound of a free kick, only for Hunt to tie it seven minutes later. After an AIC foul, Bentley was awarded a free kick from about 25 yards out. Hunt took it and struck a shot to the far post that left the AIC keeper no chance to tie the score 1-1.
Macrorie ended the day with eight saves to earn her 9th win of the season.
The Falcons' game against Southern Connecticut will get underway at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
