WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Peyton Kent (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) scored her first career goal, but it wasn't enough as Mercy slipped past the Bentley women's soccer team 2-1 in its home-opener Thursday afternoon.
Playing an NCAA Tournament team from a season ago, Kent's goal in the 57th minute got the Falcons to within 2-1. She got on the end of a through ball which led to a breakaway, allowing her an open look on net which she finished calmly for the goal.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after 13 minutes on a goal by freshman Heidi Serna. Serna took a cross from Jessica DeLeon that came from the left wing, and headed the ball down to give the visitors an early lead.
A little over four minutes after halftime, Mercy extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal by freshman Danielle Deeb, whose shot from 12 yards out went into the top corner of the net.
Mercy's record improves to 3-1 with the victory, while the Falcons drop to 2-1. They'll open Northeast-10 play on Saturday at home to Le Moyne. Match time is set for 1:00 pm.
