Bentley Suffers Tough Loss as Assumption Rallies for 3-2 OT Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Assumption capped a rally from 2-0 down with a 96th minute goal in overtime to deal the Bentley women's soccer team a tough 3-2 loss on Senior Day in a Northeast-10 match Saturday afternoon.

Before the match the team's seven seniors were honored and two of them, Jenna Skagerlind (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Patty McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), scored to stake Bentley to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 17th and 52nd minutes, respectively.

Skagerlind fired in a shot from 25 yards out for her first goal of the season. As the ball bounced off several players, Skagerlind ran onto the ball, teed up her shot and fired it past Greyhounds goalie Rachel Edgin for a 1-0 Falcons lead.

The score stayed that way past halftime until McAllister was on target in the 52nd minute to give Bentley a 2-0 lead. Edgin came way out to play a loose ball, but McAllister beat her to it, and chipped in a shot from 40 yards away for the goal.

But Assumption got back in it with a goal from junior Lindsey Miller in the 68th minute, following a corner kick that resulted in a free ball in the six-yard box.

A little under four minutes later the Greyhounds equalized on senior Andrea Bates' fifth goal of the season. Junior Liz Manganella sent a cross in from the left wing that Bates met in the six-yard box and headed in for a 2-2 tie.

Bentley nearly went back ahead in the waning moments of regulation when in the 89th minute, a close-range shot by senior Sydney Spiegel (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) was just tipped over the bar by Edgin.

Once in overtime though, freshman Emily Hill netted the winner for Assumption just six minutes in. Manganella sent a cross in to the box which was headed on by Bates to Hill in the six-yard box, who headed it in herself for the goal.

In addition to Skagerlind, Spiegel and McAllister, seniors Kelsey Regan (Holliston, Mass./Holliston), Casey Neary (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), Chelsea Owens (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) and Katie Moroney (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) were honored before the match.

The win improves Assumption's record to 6-2-4 overall and 4-2-4 in the Northeast-10, while Bentley drops to 2-8-2 and 1-7-2 in conference play. The team's next match is Tuesday afternoon at Stonehill.
