Late Penalty Kick Lifts Adelphi to 2-1 Victory over Bentley

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – An 83rd minute penalty kick goal by Adelphi's Donna Liotine was the difference as the Panthers scored two second half goals to take a 2-1 victory over the visiting Bentley women's soccer team in a Northeast-10 match Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless start to the match, senior Sydney Spiegel (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) put the Falcons in front with her third goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Spiegel made a run down the right wing, broke free from a Panthers defender to create shooting space and took advantage to put Bentley up 1-0.

Freshman goalie Paige Laliberte (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) earned the start in goal for Bentley and made four first half saves as they maintained its 1-0 advantage at halftime.

The Panthers though equalized shortly after the break on sophomore Samantha Lanza's goal in the 49th minute after a deflection in Bentley's own end.

The score stayed 1-1 for almost 32 minutes until a Falcons foul in the penalty box set up the penalty kick for Liotine, which she converted into the upper right corner of the net. That gave Adelphi a 2-1 lead, which they held onto for the final seven-plus minutes.

Bentley is now off for the next week, and they return to the pitch next Saturday when they host Assumption at 10:30 am as part of Homecoming Day at Bentley.
