No. 22 Dowling Tops Women's Soccer 1-0 in Overtime in Season-Opener

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – A 98th minute goal by junior forward Lindsey Thompson gave No. 22 Dowling a 1-0 victory over the Bentley women's soccer team in the first match of the season-opening Marriott Kickoff Classic on Saturday.

In the season-opening match for both squads, Bentley took the 22nd-ranked Golden Lions of the East Coast Conference to overtime before Thompson's strike ended the match eight minutes into the extra session.

Junior Nicole Derba (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) got the start in net for Bentley and played the first half, and was relieved by freshman Paige Laliberte (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) from the second half on and made six saves.

Bentley was outshot 5-1 in the first half, but turned it around in the second and outshot Dowling 10-8. Bentley's only shot in overtime came from freshman Paige Tetu (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and required a save of Dowling goalie Melissa Guglielmo. But just 35 seconds after that, Thompson's goal on the other end gave the Golden Lions the win.

Bentley drops to 0-1 on the season and will take on Molloy on Sunday at 12:00 on the second day of the tournament. Dowling improves to 1-0 and will play the hosts Merrimack tomorrow.
