Weagle Scores Twice to Lift Franklin Pierce over Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Franklin Pierce freshman Hannah Weagle scored two goals off set-pieces to lift the visiting Ravens to a 2-0 victory over the Bentley women's soccer team Wednesday in a Northeast-10 match.

Both of Weagle's goals, her seventh and eighth of the season, came off free kicks. The first goal came after a free kick from 30 yards out was sent into the box and knocked down by several players. Weagle gained control of the loose ball and fired a shot from 12 yards that went in to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.

While Bentley struggled for the most part to breakdown the Franklin Pierce defense to create scoring chances, junior Chelsea Owens (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) did have a good chance in the 67th minute. The ball was played to her in the left corner of the penalty area, giving her room to get a shot off. She did just that from 15 yards away, but the ball sailed just high over the cross bar.

Franklin Pierce took advantage of that missed opportunity and just minutes later Weagle scored her second of the afternoon off another free kick. The free kick this time was sent into the box from the left wing by grad student Aya Noguchi, and Weagle rose above the Bentley defense to head the ball in from five yards for a 2-0 lead in the 72nd minute.

The Falcons fall to 3-3-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the NE-10, and Franklin Pierce improves to 4-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference. Bentley's next match is Saturday at Pace at 3:30 p.m.
