Leary Scores Twice as Bentley Tops Holy Family 3-0 in Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Deirdre Leary (Holden, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) scored twice as the Bentley women's soccer team got its 2012 season off to a successful start with a 3-0 victory over Holy Family on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Bentley dominated throughout the contest, holding the majority of possession and taking 11 shots on goal to zero for Holy Family. After two good scoring chances in the first half off corner kicks, the Falcons broke through in the 54th minute on Leary's first of the afternoon as she pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and scored from 10 yards out.

Senior Molly Alfieri (Southington, Conn./Southington)doubled Bentley's lead in the 66th minute off a through ball into the box by Patty McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) that gave Alfieri a wide open shot on net.

The Falcons then put the match out of reach in the 81st minute with a determined effort as Leary scored her second. The buildup to the goal saw Alfieri take a shot on goal that was turned away by Holy Family goalie Rachel Dunkle. Freshman Caroline Fitzgerald (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) then had a shot on net stopped by Dunkle, only for Leary to drill the rebound into the back of the net.

Bentley could have gotten on the scoreboard in the first half off a pair of corner kicks if not for some bad luck. A 15th minute corner kick by Katie Moroney (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) found Leary in the box only for her header to hit the cross bar. In the 26th minute another Moroney corner found Jenna Skagerlind (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) but Dunkle denied her header with a  nice save.

With an opening day win the books, the Falcons will look to go to 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon when they face Dominican (N.Y.) on the road. Holy Family, now 0-2, face Caldwell College next Saturday.
