New Haven Slips Past Bentley on Morales’ 27th Minute Goal

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior midfielder Shannon Morales scored the game's only goal in the 27th minute as New Haven took a 1-0 victory over the Bentley University women's soccer team Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 action.

New Haven had the first scoring chance of the game in the 15th minute. Freshman Amber Simms received a cross right in the center of the box with plenty of open space, but Simms didn't get all of it and keeper Christiana Hynds (West Roxbury, Mass./Boston Latin) smothered the ball to prevent the goal.

The Chargers though took advantage of their next chance as Morales and sophomore Monica Yanez combined on the goal. Yanez sent a cross in from the right wing to Morales on the far post, who knocked it in for her first goal of the season.

Bentley had a couple of scoring opportunities in the second half but couldn't convert.

Early in the second, junior Julie Pomponi (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) fed freshman Molly Lepine (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) a centering pass in the box, but she pushed her shot just wide right.

In the 81st minute, junior Molly Alfieri (Southington, Conn./Southington) made a strong run down the right wing only to have her 15 yard shot denied by goalie Kim Taylor, who made four saves on the afternoon to earn the win.

The result gives the Chargers their second straight win and ups their record to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the NE-10, while the Falcons drop to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Bentley takes the pitch again on Wednesday night when they travel to Franklin Pierce.
