No. 19 Bentley Runs Past Saint Anselm, 14-11

Waltham, Mass. – 19th ranked Bentley stayed perfect at home this season with a 14-11 victory over NE10 rival Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons improved to 3-0 at home, and 6-1 overall and 4-1 NE10 with the victory, while the Hawks dropped to 5-3 and 3-2.

Bentley overcame a slow start, they trailed 3-0 after just over four minutes, but erased that early deficit with a 6-0 run. Sophomore Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) had the first two goals of the run, the first at the 20:03 mark. Caroline Boudreau (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) had the 3rd and 5th goals of the run, with an unassisted goal by Claire Thompson (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) at the 15:36 mark in between. Julia Glavin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) had the final goal of the run at 14:21.

The teams traded goals the rest of the half, with Bentley's goals from Glavin and senior MaryKate Staines (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus), to give them an 8-5 lead at intermission.

Falcons goalie Eliza Bresler (Newton, Mass./Newton North) made 7 of her 12 saves on the day in the first half.

Bentley scored the first three goals of the 2nd half, over the first nine minutes, to open up an 11-5 lead. The Hawks though crept back into the game with a 4-0 run, to get to within 11-9 with 16:51 remaining after a goal by Breda Holland.

The Falcons though kept them at a distance. McCarthy scored just 13 seconds after Holland's goal to make it 12-9, but that goal was quickly answered by Saint Anselm's Jenna Balboni 48 seconds later.

McCarthy though scored a man-up goal at 12:31 on a free-position shot, then scored again on a free-position at 7:12 to give Bentley a 14-10 lead. Balboni netted a free-position shot with 5:55 left for the Hawks, but that was their final goal of the day.

McCarthy had five goals and now has 11 goals in the last two games, while sophomore Dana Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) led the defensive efforts with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Bentley will look to chalk up another win on Tuesday when they host Saint Michael's at 3:00 pm.
