No. 20 Bentley Improves to 4-0 With 13-12 Double OT Win over No. 19 Assumption

Waltham, Mass. – Sophomore Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) scored off a breakaway with 1.1 seconds left in the 2nd overtime to give No. 20 Bentley a 13-12 win over No. 19 Assumption on Tuesday night.

The Falcons improve to 4-0 on the season, while they dealt Assumption (5-1) its first loss of the season. Bentley has now won three straight in OT over ranked teams.

The winning goal was first set up by Falcons goalie Eliza Bresler (Newton, Mass./Newton North) denying Assumption's Kailyn Hart from close range with 29 seconds left as Hart tried to stuff one in on the goal post. Freshman Glenna Gies (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) then started a transition down the other end as time ticked away.

Gies then found McCarthy as she entered the arc and got a shot off from about 5 yards away with 1.1 seconds left to give Bentley the win.

Gies had scored the final goal of regulation, with 1:14 remaining, to tie the game 12-12. Assumption had the final possession of regulation, but a caused turnover by McCarthy sent it to overtime.

Assumption had the first possession of overtime, but turned it over. Gies had a shot saved on Bentley's only possession with 21 seconds left that was saved.

In the 2nd half, Bentley overcame a 11-7 deficit with 10:39 remaining after a goal by Assumption's Olivia Angelo. A 4-0 run over eight minutes saw Bentley rally to tie it 1-11 after sophomore Claire Thompson (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) scored a man-up goal with 2:56 remaining.

On the next possession though, Assumption's Sarah Reilly scored a man-down goal with 1:37 left to give the visitors the lead back at 12-11. McCarthy though won the ensuing draw control, and an Assumption foul led to Gies converting a free-position shot to tie the game 11-11 with 1:14 left on the clock.

McCarthy finished the night with six goals, while Bresler made 15 saves to earn the win.

Bentley will now look to make it a 5-0 start to the season when they visit Stonehill on Saturday.
