Gillespie’s OT Goal Lifts Bentley over No. 16 NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Senior Kathleen Gillespie (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet) finished off a five goal game with the overtime winner to give the Bentley women's lacrosse team an 11-10 victory over No. 16 ranked New York Tech on Thursday.

Gillespie scored 1:25 into overtime to give the Falcons the victory in what was their first game in over two weeks, and also marked the first win of new head coach Taylor Bastien's tenure.

Gillespie scored with 5:40 left in regulation, her fourth goal of the day, to break a 9-9 tie. The Bears though scored the tying goal with 24 seconds remaining from Karie Znaniecki, which was her fifth goal of the game.

Bentley's Julia Glavin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) won the opening draw control of overtime to give Bentley possession, which they would not relinquish. Gillespie scored after a drive on net to give the Falcons the win.

Glavin and Gillespie helped Bentley dominate draw controls at 17-6. Glavin had nine and Gillespie six. Glavin also had three goals, while senior Carolyn Cruise (East Greenwich, Mass./East Greenwich) had two.

Sophomore goalie Eliza Bresler (Newton, Mass./Newton North) made 11 saves, six in the first half and five in the second half to earn the win.

The Bears led 7-4 at halftime, but Bentley erased that deficit less than five minutes into the second half. Glavin and Gillespie both scored on free-position shots in the first 1:47, and Cruise scored as well.

NYIT went ahead 8-7 with a goal by Alyssa Milano at the 18:55 mark. The next eight-plus minutes were scoreless, but Bentley got the next two goals from Glavin and Gillespie to lead 9-8 with 8:36 remaining.

Bentley's record is now 1-1 on the season. They will play their Northeast-10, and home opener on Saturday against American International.
