No. 1 Adelphi Stays Unbeaten with 13-6 Win over No. 17 Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – No. 1 ranked Adelphi improved to 6-0 on the season with a 13-6 win over 17th ranked Bentley on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 matchup. A 6-0 run by the Panthers at the end of the 1st half and into the 2nd proved to be the difference.

The first 20 minutes of the first half were tight as both teams struggled with turnovers, yet saw Adelphi hold just a slim 3-1 lead. Senior Kelsey Howard (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) had the goal for Bentley on a free-position shot at the 11:23 mark, one of her two goals on the day. That got the Falcons on the board and cut their deficit to 2-1, but Adelphi countered less than a minute later with a goal by attacker Jackie Jahelka on a free-position shot, making the score 3-1.

The game was goalless for the next nine-plus minutes, until the Panthers had a three goal burst in the final 39 seconds of the half to lead 6-1 at halftime. Midfielder Rachel O'Brien had the first two goals just 18 seconds apart, before Jill Graziano scored with just three seconds remaining.

Jahelka then scored twice in the first two minutes of the 2nd half to give the Panthers an 8-1 lead. From that point though Bentley began to fight back, scoring four of the next seven goals. Meredith Hart (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Ciara Morley (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) scored consecutive goals just 28 seconds apart, starting at the 27:35 mark.

After a 3-0 Adelphi run, Erin O'Connor (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Howard scored back-to-back, which cut the deficit to 11-5 with 16:10 remaining. However, Bentley could only score once more, which came off the stick of O'Connor with 6:56 to play.

The Falcons now fall to 2-5 on the season. They'll look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night when they visit Saint Anselm.
