Bentley Falls to No. 15 Stonehill in Northeast-10 Battle, 14-8

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite six assists from senior Taylor Bastien (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown), the Bentley women's lacrosse team fell to Northeast-10 rival Stonehill 14-8 on Tuesday night.

The Skyhawks never trailed and led by as much as six goals in the first half, but Bentley made them work for it in the second half, closing to within a four-goal deficit with just over 13 minutes remaining. But Stonehill wouldn't allow them to get any closer and held on for the victory.

Stonehill controlled the first half despite turning the ball over 12 times. They opened the game with three straight goals before Bentley got on the scoreboard with a strike from freshman Taylor Lunden (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) at the 20:34 mark. Stonehill though countered with four straight to take a 7-1 lead with 3:29 left in the half.

Bentley though finished the half strong and went into the break with some momentum after scoring two of the half's final three goals, coming from freshman Ellie Shuman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) and Bastien. Bastien's goal came with 11 seconds remaining and made it an 8-3 game.

The Falcons scored the first two goals of the second half to pull within 8-5, with senior Jackie Brown's (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) first of three second half goals making it a three-goal game. But Stonehill responded with three straight tallies, the last of which coming off the stick of freshman Elizabeth Vetter with 15:15 to play, making it an 11-5 game.

But two straight goals from Brown in the span of 28 seconds, with Bastien assisting on both of them, got the Falcons to within 11-7. Stonehill though got the all-important next goal from senior Kelsey Shannahan, her third of the night, with 10:03 remaining.

Neither team scored for another seven-plus minutes, and though Bentley's Ciara Morley (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) scored it with 2:52 left to make the score 12-8, there was not enough time left for them to make up the deficit.

The Skyhawks improve to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in NE-10 play with the win, while Bentley's records drop to 4-7 and 3-4. They next take the field on Saturday at Assumption. Game time is set for 11:00 am in Worcester.
