No. 5 Bentley Extends Win Streak to 10, 64-48 over Southern Connecticut

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate guard Becca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y./St. Anthony's HS) scored 15 points, junior forward Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) recorded her tenth double-double and Bentley University allowed less than 50 for the sixth time as the Falcons posted a 64-48 win over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.

The win was the tenth straight for the nation's fifth-ranked Division II team with Bentley improving to 18-1 overall and 12-1 conference, remaining a half-game up on Stonehill. Southern Connecticut, the co-leader in the NE10's Southwest Division, dipped to 13-7 overall, including 7-5 NE10.

Led by a nine-point second quarter by Musgrove, Bentley carried a 35-27 lead into the halftime break.

Southern Connecticut opened the second with ten unanswered points, including five from senior guard Africa Williams (New York, N.Y.), to claim a 22-15 lead. Bentley responded with 14 straight, keeping the Owls stuck on 22 on the scoreboard for more than five minutes.

The Bentley run began with an old-fashioned three-point play by Musgrove and continued with trifectas by senior guard Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) from the right wing, Musgrove from the left corner and sophomore guard Maddy Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS) from the right win.

The Falcons, who were hindered by turnovers (24) and missed free throws (11) all afternoon, were unable to create any separation throughout the third and the opening minutes of the fourth. The lead remained between five and ten until Williams scored with 6:07 to play, bringing the visiting Owls within four, 52-48.

Those proved to be the final points Southern would score as Bentley closed the game with 12 unanswered points. Seniors Cassie Smith (Edison, N.J./Metuchen HS) and Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) each had four during that closing burst.

Musgrove, 6 of 12 from the floor, was also one of five Falcons with at least five rebounds as the home team dominated in that department, 51-28. Lux topped the list with 10 rebounds and also contributed 11 points.

Bentley also received nine points from Green, along with eight points, five rebounds and three assists from Cassie Smith. Macchi Smith scored seven and also claimed six boards from her point guard position.

Williams was the only Owl to score in doubles as she finished with 17.

Incredibly, Southern managed only four points off Bentley's 24 turns, 11 coming in live ball situations. The Owls were held to .297 shooting, including 3-for-20 in the fourth, while the Falcons connected at a .469 clip.

Bentley will be off until next Saturday when it travels to New York to face Pace University. The time of that game has been changed to 3:30 pm.
