Gemma, Lux Combine for 39 as No. 15 Bentley Controls Saint Anselm, 92-66

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy) put up 20 points and 17 rebounds, sophomore forward Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) followed with 19 and 12, and three teammates also scored in doubles as Bentley University rolled to a 92-66 Senior night win over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Saturday at the Dana Center.

The win was the 11th straight for the 15th-ranked team in Division II, which improved to 23-4 overall and 19-1 in the conference. Saint Anselm dropped to 17-9 overall and 12-8 NE10 after being doubled on the boards, 52-26.

Following a fast start by the Hawks, Bentley ran off 15 unanswered to go up 19-9 with two-and-a-half minutes left in the opening stanza and was never threatened.

That spurt began with a top-of-the-key three from junior guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./ Damascus HS) and was finished by consecutive threes by another junior guard, Trevena Bennett (Union, N.J./Gill St. Bernard HS). In between, Gemma hit a short jumper, junior guard Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) made two from the foul line and Lux made a lay-up.

Bentley, up 23-15 after one, doubled its lead by halftime after limiting the Hawks to eight second-quarter points on 3-of-12 shooting.

The Falcons opened the third with an 11-2 run to double the visitors, 50-25, with 7:28 still left in the stanza. Gemma started that surge with a pair of lay-ups in the opening 30 seconds.

Bentley was up 63-42 after three and saw its lead peak at 29, 86-57, on a three-point play by graduate student and center Melina Kollia (Athens, Greece) with 3:56 left. She finished with a season-best nine points on four-of-five shooting.

Gemma, now exactly 50 points shy of Lauren Battista's school record of 2,112, made eight of 14 shots overall and three of four from the charity stripe. Her 17 rebounds included eight offensive, and she also finished with two assists and two steals.

Lux scored her 19 on 7-of-11 accuracy overall. Green (3-4 from three) followed with 14 points, and Smith filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and a steal.

Senior guard Candace Andrews (Boston) led Saint Anselm with 21 points on 9-21 shooting, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Bentley shot .515 overall, made seven of 13 three-pointers and was 17 of 24 on free throws. The Falcons held the edge in each of those categories with the Hawks finishing .385, 4 of 12 and 12 of 19.

The Falcons will wrap up the regular season Tuesday at Merrimack.
