Lewis Shines as Bentley Tops Philadelphia, 69-60, to Improve to 2-0

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Freshman guard Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England) provided 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as Bentley University improved to 2-0 with a 69-60 victory over Philadelphia University in non-conference women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center.

The majority of Lewis' points came from outside the arc as she connected on four of seven three-point attempts. The long ball played a major role in Bentley's success against Philadelphia with the Falcons knocking down 11 of 23 from deep, including five of eight in the first quarter to take a 25-19 lead.

After the opening quarter, Bentley held the lead for all but 14 seconds and appropriately, it was a three that put the Falcons in front to stay. Senior guard Jane White (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan HS) connected from long range with 4:43 left in the second after the Rams had tied the game at 28 on a jumper by senior guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa.).

Philadelphia scored first to start the third but Bentley countered with an 11-1 spurt to take its first 13-point lead of the afternoon, 45-32 with 5:21 remaining in the penultimate quarter. Junior forward Jen Gemma (Milton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) launched the run with a lay-up, Lewis hit one from deep and after a Ram free throw, freshman guard Amy McConnell (South Windsor, Conn./ South Windsor HS) drained a pair from downtown.

The Rams got within five before the third quarter buzzer sounded and made it a two-possession game twice in the fourth, but got no closer.

Lewis and Gemma (13 points, 4 rebounds) were both six of ten overall from the floor, helping the Falcons finish at .480. White, one of four Falcons to make at least two treys, also reached doubles, finishing with 10 points.

Bentley received a big effort from the bench with the Falcon non-starters outscoring their counterparts from Philly, 22-5. Leading the way was sophomore guard Trevena Bennett (Union, N.J./Gill St. Bernard HS), with two triples and nine points. Freshman post Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/ Thornton Academy) only scored two points but helped out with nine rebounds and four assists.

Young led Philadelphia (0-2) with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 40-minute effort, and senior forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa.) followed with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Falcons outrebounded the home team 35-27 and limited Philadelphia to 43 percent shooting, including 4 of 12 from three. Bentley finished with an 18-11 edge in points off turnovers despite losing the ball 21 times, four more than the Rams.

Bentley has one more road game, Wednesday at Merrimack in the Northeast-10 Conference opener, before making its home debut next Saturday against Franklin Pierce.
