Bentley Back in Dana Center Wednesday to Face Strong New Haven Team

WALTHAM, Mass. – Only two women's basketball players in the Northeast-10 Conference are currently averaging at least 17 points and 10 rebounds, Bentley University sophomore forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy) and University of New Haven senior guard Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y.).

The two will be on the court Wednesday night when the Falcons host the Chargers at the Dana Center with tip-off scheduled at 5:30 pm.

Bentley, the defending NCAA Division II national champions but currently in the midst of a rebuilding season, will be looking to halt a five-game slide, a stretch that has seen the Falcons average only 59.4 points and shoot just 37 percent. The Falcons are currently 7-10 overall and 2-9 in the NE-10, two games out of the final playoff spot in the Northeast Division.

New Haven saw its seven-game winning streak halted by Franklin Pierce on Saturday and will bring a record of 13-3 into Wednesday's game. The Chargers, 7-3 in conference play, are tied for second in the Southwest Division, a game back of Adelphi.

Gemma, a six-footer who put up 19 points and nine rebounds in Saturday's loss to American International, owns an 18.6 scoring average, just a shade off the best single season mark in program history. She also averages 11 rebounds, best by a Falcon in more than 30 years, and is the team-leader in blocks (14).

Hayes, despite being only five-eight, is averaging a double-double for the third straight season. Last year's Defensive Player of the Year in the Northeast-10 has produced 18.8 points and 2.2 steals a game this month and has had seven games this season with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Both teams have a second double-figure scorer, freshman guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./ Damascus HS) for Bentley and senior forward Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn.) for New Haven.

Green has struggled with her shot in the last couple games but is still averaging 11.4 points, second best among NE-10 freshmen. She has made 41 percent of her three-pointers and has connected on five in a game three times, most recently Jan. 3 against Saint Anselm.

Moore has averaged 10.3 points and like Hayes, is a force on the offensive boards with 43. The Charges claim 14 of their own missed shots a game, third best in the NE-10, while Bentley is eighth at 12.4.

New Haven has three other players putting up at least eight points a game while senior guard Kelsey Mattice (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) is the only other Falcon averaging over six during the last ten games. She's at 7.5 over that span and 6.5 overall.

Following Wednesday, Bentley will have a week off before playing at Saint Rose next Wednesday.
