Bentley Looks to Get Back on Track at 14-1 Adelphi

WALTHAM, Mass. – Over the last four years, the Bentley University women's basketball team dominated the Northeast-10 Conference with only six losses to conference opponents during an amazing four-year run that culminated with the 2014 NCAA Division II national championship.

After the graduation of seven major contributors from that squad, wins have been tougher to come by this season with the Falcons 7-8 overall and only 2-7 in conference action, with four of the Nep-10 losses by four or less.

Coach Barbara Stevens' team will be back in action Wednesday night and it won't be an easy task as they will be at 14-1 and nationally-ranked Adelphi University. Game time at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City, N.Y. is 5:30 pm.

Bentley will be attempting to end a slide that hit three games with a 65-62 loss at Southern Connecticut State on Saturday. The Falcons led by nine with less five minutes left, but were outscored 16-4 down the stretch.

In four January games, sophomore forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy) and freshman guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) have accounted for more than half of the team's scoring with Gemma averaging 20.8 points and Green 15.

Gemma, the Northeast-10 Spalding Player of the Week for the third time this season, will enter Wednesday's game with averages of 18.9 points and 11.3 rebounds, both of which rank second in the conference. She's accounted for half of the NE-10's six 30-point games and has nine double-doubles.

Green had a rough shooting performance at Southern but still owns the fifth best three-point mark (.458) in the conference. Her scoring average stands at 11.9 and she's topped 20 points three times in her last eight games.

After those two, Bentley's top scorers this month have been veteran guards Jane White (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan HS) and Kelsey Mattice (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS). White has provided 6.3 points and three assists off the bench and Mattice's January averages are six points and 3.8 assists.

Adelphi, number seven in this week's USA Today Sports/WBCA Division II rankings, was not from the ranks of the unbeaten last week by another one-loss team, Stonehill. The Panthers are the conference's highest scoring team at 78.6 per game, but have been limited to 72 (by Stonehill) and 69 (in a five-point win over Saint Anselm) in their last two.

In addition to scoring, the Panthers lead the NE-10 in steals (10.8 a game) and turnovers forced (20.4) and are among the conference's top two in both field goal percentage (.447) and opponents' field goal percentage (.353).

Senior forward Kelly Mannix ranks in the top five of the Northeast-10 in a number of categories, including scoring (17.6), rebounds (10.3), field goal percentage (.543), three-pointers (37), three-point accuracy (.474) and steals (34).

Graduate student Anh-Dao Tran has also been having a strong season for the Panthers with the former New Haven guard averaging 15.3 points and 5.4 assists.

This week's schedule also has Bentley hosting American International, currently 8-8, on Saturday.
