Bentley Set to Close out Memorable 2014 Saturday at Bridgeport

WALTHAM, Mass. – 2014 has been a special year for the Bentley University women's basketball program, one that featured the culmination of a 35-0 season with a 73-65 win over West Texas A&M for the Falcons' first-ever NCAA Division II national championship.

There was also coach Barbara Stevens joining the exclusive 900-win club, Lauren Battista becoming the program's all-time leading scorer, numerous national awards for Battista and a number of ceremonies to celebrate the title, including Courtney Finn throwing out the first pitch at Fenway and last month's banner raising.

Bentley will take to the court for the final time in 2014 on Saturday when the Falcons will play at the University of Bridgeport, with the tip slated at 2 pm. Links to follow online will be posted at www.bentleyfalcons.com.

Ironically, 2014 for the Bentley Falcons will finish against the same team in which it started. Back on Jan. 3, they rolled to a 72-42 homecourt win over Bridgeport with Battista and Courtney Finn, a pair of All-Americas, each scoring 16.

Bentley will go into the game with a 5-5 overall record after Sunday's 72-61 home victory over Holy Family University. That effort featured a career-best 31 points from sophomore forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy), one that coupled with 16 earlier in the week against Franklin Pierce earned her the Spalding NE-10 Player of the Week award.

Gemma leads the Northeast-10 in rebounding, pulling in 12.2 a game, and her scoring average is up to 17.0. Of her rebounds, nearly five a game come at the offensive end.

Freshmen have accounted for 45 percent of Bentley's scoring this season with Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS), a starter in every game, leading the way at 11.0. She leads the Falcons in threes (18) and is one of five NE-10 players shooting .429 or better from deep with at least 1.5 made per game.

Point guard Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) follows at 10.6, along with 5.4 rebounds, and forward Trevena Bennett (Union, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's School) is right behind her at 10.4.

Among the upperclassman, senior guard Kelsey Mattice (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) has the best scoring average at 6.1. She's put in nine a game over the last five, a stretch in which she's buried 9 of 15 three-pointers.

Saturday's game will be the second in 19 hours for Bridgeport, which will take a 1-7 overall record into Friday night's home contest with Assumption College. The Purple Knights have dropped six in a row with an average margin of just 5.2 points.

Bridgeport has four double figure scorers with senior guard Jenna Hoffman (Manchester Center, Vt.)  leading the way at 15.3.

After the holidays, Bentley will face three home games in a span of five days, beginning Jan. 3 against Saint Anselm.
