Bennett Named NE-10 Spalding Rookie of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – After leading the defending Division II national champions in scoring in each of her first two collegiate games, Bentley University freshman forward Trevena Bennett (Union, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's School) has been named the Spalding Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference.

During the NE-10/CACC Challenge at Merrimack College, Bennett buried 9 of 16 three-pointers (56 percent) while averaging 17 points and four rebounds in a pair of victories. She led the team in scoring in both games, with 18 points (7-15 fg, 4-8 3's) and four rebounds against Goldey-Beacom and 16 points and four rebounds vs. Post.

Following the opening weekend of the season, Bennett has the conference's fifth-best scoring average and is number one in three-pointers made and third in three-point accuracy.

Bennett came to Bentley from Gill St. Bernard's where she was a two-year captain and a first-team All-County champion.

Also recognized by the conference with selection to the Weekly Honor Roll was sophomore post Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy). She posted double-doubles in each of her first two collegiate starts, with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three assists against Goldey-Beacom and 13 points, 13 rebounds and two steals against Post. Overall, she averaged 15 points, 12.5 rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block as Bentley extended its winning streak to 37, tying for the fourth longest in Division II women's basketball history.

Bentley, number five in the preseason USA Today Sports/WBCA Division II poll, opens conference play Wednesday at Assumption (5:30 pm).
