Bentley Heads to Assumption in Search of a 3-0 Start

WALTHAM, Mass. – After a pair of non-conference wins to open the season, the defending NCAA Division II women's basketball national champion Bentley University Falcons will turn their attention to Northeast-10 Conference opponents for the next three games, beginning Wednesday night at Assumption College.

The opening jump ball at Laska Gym is scheduled for 5:30 pm and links for free live video will be available at www.bentleyfalcons.com.

Bentley, whose current 37-game winning streak is tied for the fourth longest in Division II history, opened with wins over Goldey-Beacom (62-52) and Post University (72-57). While turnovers were at times an issue for the young team, rebounding certainly wasn't during the opening weekend as coach Barbara Stevens' team out-boarded the two teams by a combined 104-57 while providing the five-time national coach of the year with career wins 918 and 919.

Leading the Falcons (number five in Division II preseason) in that category were sophomore forwards Jen Gemma (Milton/Milton HS) and Brittany Gregory (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay HS). Gemma averaged 12.5 rebounds and Gregory collected 10.5 a game, with each player having eight offensive boards in the two games.

Trevena Bennett (Union, N.J./Union HS), one of two freshmen who started both games and this week's NE-10 Spalding Rookie of the Week, and Gemma, a 2014 NE-10 All-Rookie selection, carried the scoring load for Bentley, averaging 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Senior forward and co-captain Carlene Kluge (Reading/Reading HS) made six of eight shots and averaged eight points during her first two career starts.

Assumption is also off to a 2-0 start following wins over Caldwell (66-64) and Dominican (59-40). The Greyhounds limited the two teams to a .343 field goal percentage and forced 18.5 turnovers a game.

Junior point guard Kelly Conley leads the Hounds in scoring, averaging 15 points along with 4.5 rebounds and three assists. She hit the game-winner with four-tenths of a second left against Caldwell and scored 17 in the Dominican game.

Assumption, which has a roster dominated by sophomores and freshmen, also received 10.5 points and eight rebounds a game over the weekend from forward Caitlin Ackerman, the team's only senior.

After opening the season with three straight road games, Bentley will hoist the national championship banner Saturday afternoon before taking on Stonehill College in the home opener. Game time is 1:30 with the ceremony scheduled to start at about 1:15.
