Battista Named Division II Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year; National Champion Also Cited by National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame

WALTHAM, Mass. – The awards continued for former Bentley University women's basketball great Lauren Battista (North Easton/Oliver Ames HS) as the Division II Conference Commissioners Association selected her as the 2014 Division II Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday.

The Division II Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year was Trevor Adams, a football player from Northwest Missouri State. "We are excited to announce Lauren and Trevor as the Division II Scholar-Athletes of the Year," said Steve Murray, Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and president of the DII CCA. "These two student-athletes are shining examples of the balance that is the hallmark of Division II, and are truly deserving of this honor."

In addition, Battista was selected as the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year. She'll receive that award Sept. 14 during an awards ceremony in Commack, N.Y.

The two awards are the latest in a long list that Battista has received since her final season culminated with a come-from-behind 73-65 win over West Texas A&M in the NCAA Division II national championship game March 28, capping a perfect 35-0 season. Among the honors are the following:

  • Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II Player of the Year
  • Honda Award as the Division II Women's Athlete of the Year
  • Capital One Division II Academic All-America of the Year (all sports)
  • Northeast-10 Conference Woman of the Year
  • Northeast-10 Conference Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year
  • Bentley's Outstanding Female Senior Athlete
  • Edward J. Powers Award as Bentley's top senior scholar-athlete

Battista, who was the Northeast-10 Player of the Year for the second time in three years, averaged 17.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists during her senior season. The three-time WBCA All-America and three-time Capital One Academic All-America finished her career as Bentley's all-time leading scorer with 2,112 points and left the court victorious 124 times in 135 collegiate games.

Battista also experienced winning last summer when she led Team USA to the gold medal in the Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Battista was also a standout in the classroom, compiling a brilliant 3.96 grade point average while majoring in marketing and liberal studies. In five of her eight semesters, she posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.
