Bentley Drops Two to Rollins in Season-Opening Twinbill; Slavin Drives in Only Run for Falcons

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Freshman righty Ashley Worrell (Oviedo, Fla.) pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener and senior righty Abby Summers (Weston, Mo.) followed with a one-hitter in the nightcap as Rollins College swept Bentley University, 3-0 and 4-1, in non-conference college softball Friday night Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

Bentley, which was making the earliest season debut in program history, scored its only run in the sixth inning. Sophomore third baseman Lindsay Allen (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Technical HS) drew a two-out walk and scored on a double to left by junior shortstop Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS).

For 4-0 Rollins in game two, both senior center fielder Jordan Davis (Winter Springs, Fla.) and freshman shortstop Raiven Bryant (Niceville, Fla.) scored twice. The Ravens grabbed the lead with a run in the first, made it 3-0 in the fourth and picked up an insurance run in the sixth.

Summers struck on 14 of the 25 batters she faced and issued a pair of walks. A trio of Bentley pitchers combined to limit the Tars to four hits but issued nine walks.

Game one was scoreless until Rollins struck for two runs in the fourth inning. Senior second baseman Abigail Sexton (Dunedin, Fla.) broke the deadlock with a sacrifice fly and sophomore third baseman Talia Kentoffio (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) followed with an RBI double.

Worrell struck out seven in a complete game effort for the Tars.

The two teams will complete the three-game series with a 9 am game Saturday morning.
