Bentley Storms Back for 8-6 Game 2 Win & Split of Doubleheader with Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – After facing a 6-0 deficit, the Bentley University Falcons came storming back to earn an 8-6 win over Assumption College in the nightcap of a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon on the Bentley softball field.

Assumption (13-10, 6-4 NE10 Northeast) took the opener, 6-2, on the strength of a solo home run by senior first baseman Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I.) in the first inning and a bases-loaded triple by freshman designated player Haley Drakoulakos (Lowell) in the second.

The Falcon game two comeback featured eight runs over the final four innings, including three in both the fourth and sixth innings.

Bentley climbed in front with three runs in the sixth. After senior shortstop Catie Noons (North Dighton/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) drew a bases-loaded walk, sophomore right fielder Rachel Rogers (Windham, N.H.) tied the game up, driving in sophomore left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham/Bridgewater Raynham HS) from third with an RBI single to center.

Another sophomore, center fielder Juliana Romeo (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield HS) singled to left, bringing home yet another second-year player, second baseman Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./ Rocky Hill HS), with the go-ahead run.

Bentley (10-23, 5-7 NE10 Northeast) added an insurance run in the seventh when freshman third baseman Noa Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Acad.) doubled and scored on a two-out error. Rivera helped ignite the Falcon comeback with a two-run single to center in the fourth.

The Falcons drew within two in the fifth when Slavin led off with a double to right and scored on a single to left by senior first baseman Jordan Ballantyne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington HS).

Rivera and Romeo both had two hits for Bentley, which outhit the Greyhounds 10-9. Freshman Lauren Calabrese (Cave Creek, Ariz./Boulder Creek HS) earned the win with five innings of solid relief in which she struck out three and held the Hounds to three hits and one run.

The opener started out in a positive fashion for the Falcons, who were officially the visiting team, with two runs in the top of the first. A two-run single by Noons scored both freshman designated player Lea Thompson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS), who led off with a walk, and Kororaky, who had singled to left.

Assumption matched the Falcons with two unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning before taking a 5-2 lead on the triple by Drakoulakos in the second.

Hits were even at eight apiece with Korotsky, Ballantyne and Slavin each having two for the Falcons.

Freshman Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H.) had two hits and the same number of runs scored for Assumption in game one. The Hounds were led in game two by junior left fielder Caitin Mirabelli (Shoreham, N.Y.) and junior catcher Victoria Petrie (Marlborough), each with two hits and two RBI.

Bentley is back at home Wednesday for a 3 pm doubleheader against Stonehill.
