1st-Inning Run Lifts Assumption to 1-0 Win over Bentley University

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption College Greyhounds scored in the top of the first inning and went on to post a 1-0 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Wednesday evening at the WPI softball field.

Designated player Haley Drakoulakas singled to right with one out, stole second and scored what proved to be the game's only run on a double to left by senior first baseman Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I.).

Bentley, which was limited to four hits by a pair of Assumption pitchers, had a runner reach second in the first, fourth and sixth innings, but could not get any closer to scoring.

Freshman Mia Nowicki (Chelsea) and senior Kendal Roy (Grafton) combined on the shutout for Assumption with each striking out five and allowing two hits. Nowicki pitched the first four for the win and Roy the final three for the save.

Sophomore Kayleigh Fitzpatrick (East Hampstead, N.H./Timberlane HS) went the distance from the center circle for Bentley, striking out two while allowing only two base runners after the first inning.

Center fielder Juliana Romeo (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield HS), also a sophomore, had two of Bentley's four hits.

Assumption remained in first in the NE10 Northeast Division, improving to 11-6 and 4-0 Northeast. Bentley fell to 4-3 in the division and 9-19 overall.

Bentley will begin a three-game series at Southern New Hampshire Friday at 4 pm.
