Slavin & Serafini Help Bentley Gain Split with LIU Post after Pioneers Take Game 1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore shortstop Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) had two hits, two runs and two RBI, and classmate Kaileigh Serafini (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady HS) was 3-for-4, as Bentley University held on for an 11-9 game two victory over LIU Post in a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday on the Bentley softball field.

In the opener, LIU used three hits from each of its first two batters in the lineup, junior catcher Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) and freshman shortstop Patricia Dunn (Surrey, B.C.), to claim a 6-3 victory.

Game two saw Bentley take a lead it would never relinquish with three runs in the bottom of the third. Senior second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) had an RBI double, Serafini provided an RBI single to center and an error allowed senior first baseman Jordan Ballantyne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington HS) to score the third run.

Both freshman designated player Lea Thompson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS) and Slavin each had two run singles during a six-run fourth that made it a 9-2 game.

LIU Post (12-10) battled back to get within two with three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh, with two Falcon runs in the bottom of the sixth proving to be key.

Sophomore lefty Kayleigh Fitzpatrick (East Hampstead, N.H./Timberlane Reg. HS), who started and finished the game for the Falcons, preserved her own win by re-entering the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh. She gave up an RBI single to the first batter she faced before closing things out with two fly ball outs.

In addition to the three hits from Serafini and two from Slavin, Ballantyne also had two hits and two runs scored for the Falcons.

Freshman third baseman Breanna Klaiber (Ironton, Ohio) led LIU Post with three hits, two runs and two RBI.

Game one saw LIU junior Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) keep the Bentley bats in check while her teammates totaled 13 hits. Olshevski, 7-3 on the season, struck out five while holding the Falcons to six hits and two earned runs.

Thompson led Bentley in game one with two hits and two RBI.

Bentley, 7-15, will be looking for its fourth win in five games when it hosts Franklin Pierce Monday at 4 pm.
