New Haven Sweeps Bentley in Doubleheader, 3-1 and 11-0

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa.) pitched a four-hitter in game one and classmate Kyle Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va.) followed with a one-hit shutout in the nightcap as the University of New Haven swept Bentley University, 3-1 and 11-0, in Northeast-10 Conference softball Sunday afternoon at the New Haven softball field. Game two was halted after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Bentley's only run of the afternoon gave the Falcons a second-inning lead in the opener. Freshman designated player Lea Thompson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS) led off with a double to right center, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on a single to left center by freshman catcher Lindsey Allen (Worcester, Mass./ Worcester Technical HS). Allen had two of the Falcons' five hits in the doubleheader.

The only other game one runs were scored in the bottom of the third. After the Chargers loaded the bases on a double by junior shortstop Madison Derosia (Brattleboro, Vt.), a walk and a single by junior third baseman Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y.), two ground balls and a Falcon error enabled the three runs to score.

Butts, 6-3 on the season, walked three and struck out two while scattering four hits. Freshman Ashley Keegan (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic HS) pitched well in defeat for Bentley, allowing five hits and two earned runs with two walks and no strikeouts.

Game two saw New Haven (10-9, 3-1 NE10) jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and break it open with six in the third.

Derosia, batting out of the ninth slot in the lineup, drove in three with a two-run double in the second and a groundout in the third. Senior second baseman Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) also played a key role with two hits, two runs and two RBI in two at bats.

Stonebraker, who carried a no-hitter into the fifth, struck out nine and walked just one.

Bentley, 4-12 overall and 2-3 NE10, will look to get back on track when it plays a doubleheader at Merrimack College Tuesday at 3 pm.
