McQuaid Walk-Off Single Gives Bentley Win over Mercyhurst; Georgian Court Edges Falcons in Game 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – An infield single to short by senior designated player Stephanie McQuaid (Windham, N.H./ Austin Prep) plated sophomore center fielder Juliana Romeo (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield HS) with the winning run, giving Bentley University a walk-off 5-4 win over Mercyhurst University in non-conference softball Monday at Legends Way 5.

Game two of the day didn't go as well as Georgian Court University scored twice in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-1 win over the Falcons.

Against Mercyhurst, Bentley jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth. The second inning featured freshman third baseman Noe Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Acad.) hitting a two-run homer to left after a double by freshman left fielder Lea Thompson (Trumbull, Conn.).

McQuaid was involved in the Falcons' next two runs with an RBI double in the third and an RBI single in the fifth. She finished with three hits in four at bats.

Freshman Ashley Keegan (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic HS), who pitched the first five-plus innings and the final inning and a third, earned her first collegiate win. She scattered three hits and gave up only one of the Lakers' runs.

Bentley's 12 hits included two apiece by Romeo, sophomore right fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater Raynham HS) and senior second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth HS).

The Falcons carried a 1-0 lead for most of the way against Georgian Court after scoring in the top of the first. Romeo led off with a single and later scored on McQuaid's fourth hit of the day, a single up the middle.

The shutout and the lead vanished quickly in the sixth on a two-run homer to left center by designated player Samantha Reilly (Toms River, N.J.).

That was one of only four hits allowed by Bentley freshman pitcher Lauren Calabrese (Cave Creek, Ariz./Boulder Creek HS), who walked three and struck out four.

Bentley (1-4) will return to action Wednesday with games against LIU Post and the University of Mary.
