St. Michael’s Rallies Late for 5-4 Win over Bentley

COLCHESTER, Vt. – St. Michael's College broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to post a 5-4 win over visiting Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Saturday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field.

With the bases loaded following a double, a bunt single and a walk, Purple Knight freshman third baseman Aleksandra Apkarian (Butler, N.J.) put her team back on top with a two-run single to left.

Bentley got one back in the top of the seventh before stranding the potential tying run on third base. Freshman first baseman Stacey Korotsky (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater Raynham HS) led off with a single to left, stole second and moved to third on a grounder to short. Senior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS), playing her final career road game, drove her in with a grounder to short that was mishandled.

Freshman Sami Palazzolo (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley School) pinch ran for Kennedy and stole second. A grounder to first got her to third before winning pitcher Torie Rathwell (Guilderland, N.Y.) ended the game by getting aa strikeout.

Bentley, which picked up a run in the first on an RBI triple off the bat of freshman shortstop Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS), was the short end of a 3-1 score after four.

In the fifth, junior third baseman Stephanie McQuaid (Windham, N.H./Austin Prep HS) hit a one-out double and Slavin was hit by a pitch with two outs. After a passed ball put Slavin in scoring position, both scored on a two-run single to left by freshman center fielder Juliana Romeo (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield HS).

St. Michael's (12-20, 10-10 NE10 Northeast) outhit the Falcons 9-5 with Rathwell and Apkarian the only players in the game with two.

Bentley (11-23, 4-14 NE10 Northeast) will close out the season Sunday with a home doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire (12 noon).
