Bentley Softball Swept by Saint Anselm on Senior Day, 4-1 and 2-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite a hit from senior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./ Bedford HS) in each game and a career-best ten strikeouts in game two from senior lefty Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS), Bentley University was swept by Saint Anselm College on Senior Day, 4-1 and 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Saturday at Bentley.

The opener was even at one apiece until the top of the seventh when the visiting Hawks struck for three runs. After a walk, infield single and bunt single on an attempted sacrifice loaded the bases, an RBI single through the right side by left fielder Maggie Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) brought in the go-ahead run. Later in the inning, an errant throw home on a fielder's choice allowed Saint Anselm to score twice and extend the differential to three.

Bentley's only run of the doubleheader was scored in the bottom of the first. Senior third baseman Katelyn Lebreux (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford HS) reached on an infield single and scored on Kennedy's double down the left field line.

Senior Sam Hennequin (Auburn, N.H.) pitched a five-hitter for Saint Anselm to gain the win while grad student Hannah King (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk HS) took the loss for Bentley. She allowed nine hits and two earned runs while striking out a pair.

The only runs in game two were scored by Saint Anselm (12-13, 9-4 NE10 Northeast) in the top of the third. With runners on second and third following two hits and a sacrifice, junior catcher Megan Murrell (Scarborough, Maine) brought both in on a two-run single up the middle.

The shutout was posted by freshman Morgan Perry (Bethany, Conn.), who struck out four while allowing two singles and two walks. Smith, in her first complete game of the season, allowed five hits and three walks while fanning ten. She struck out the side in both the first and second innings.

Bentley (8-20, 2-11 NE10 Northeast) will host Saint Anselm in another doubleheader Sunday at noon with the first game conference and the second non-conference.
