Despite Strong Pitching, Bentley Swept by Stonehill, 1-0 and 3-0

EASTON, Mass. – Bentley University pitchers Hannah King (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk HS) and Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS) combined to allow only six hits in a doubleheader at Stonehill College Wednesday, but despite that, the Falcons were swept by the Skyhawks, 1-0 and 3-0, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball at Father Gartland Field.

In the opener, King, a grad student, authored a complete-game one-hitter but that lone hit left the park, a second-inning home run by senior designated player Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, N.J.). She struck out six and walked one.

The nightcap saw Smith, a senior, allow two singles in her four innings of work. King came on for two hitless innings before running into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Following two singles, freshman pinch-hitter Kazi Walker (Quaker Hill, Conn.) ended the twinbill with a home run to left.

Bentley totaled ten hits during the doubleheader, including two in each game by freshman shortstop Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS). She's hit safely in seven straight and is a sizzling 12 of 26 during the streak.

Center fielder Juliana Romeo (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield HS), another freshman, added three hits for the Falcons, including a leadoff double in the seventh inning of the opener.

Bentley had multiple base runners in each of the first three innings in game two, but was 0-for-3 in three at bats with runners in scoring position.

Junior Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, N.Y.) authored both shutouts for Stonehill (10-22, 6-5 NE10 Northeast). She threw a four-hitter in the opener, followed with a six-hitter in the nightcap and had a total of seven strikeouts.

Bentley (8-18, 2-9 NE10 Northeast) is scheduled to begin a three-home series with Saint Anselm Friday at 3 pm.
