Bentley Blanked Twice on Final Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The 10-game season-opening trip to central Florida for the Bentley University softball team came to an end Wednesday with the Falcons suffering a pair of shutout losses, 7-0 to Bemidji State University and 5-0 to Eckerd College at the National Training Center.

The Falcons were limited to just one hit in each game, a fifth-inning single by junior center fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) in the opener and a third-inning single by junior third baseman Katelyn Lebreux (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford HS) against Eckerd.

Senior righty Jenna Massingill (Keewatin, Minn.) authored the one-hitter for Bemidji as she struck out 16 of the 22 batters she faced.

Despite her dominance, it was a scoreless game until the fifth when the Beavers struck for four runs. Included was a two-run triple by senior left fielder Lyndsey Peterson (Cottonwood, Minn.). Bemidji (13-5)added to its lead with three more in the sixth.

The second game featured a one-hitter by sophomore right hander Janna Gaburo (Pittsgrove, N.J.). She did it in different style than Massingill, striking out only two.

All the scoring came in the fifth inning with four of the five unearned. Sophomore catcher Dana Paul (Hanover Park, Ill.) drove in the first run and sophomore center fielder Carrie Shere (River Forest, Ill.) had a two-run single later in the inning.

Bentley finished the trip to 2-8 and is scheduled to open its Northeast-10 schedule this weekend with doubleheaders at Saint Rose and Le Moyne.
