Ferris Authors 4-Hit Shutout as Bentley Wins 1, Loses 1 in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior lefty Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) turned in a four-hit shutout to lead Bentley University to a 3-0 win over Philadelphia University in non-conference softball Tuesday afternoon at the National Training Center.

The win came in the Falcons' second game of the day. Earlier, they dropped a 10-2 five-inning decision to 11-7 Minot State.

Ferris' fourth career shutout saw her walk two and strike out four with two of the four hits against her coming with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. She stranded seven runners on base and did not allow the lead-off batter in any inning to reach.

Bentley's two-run fourth inning was ignited by a lead-off double to center from junior center fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.Y./Saint John Vianney HS). Sophomore second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth HS) followed with another two-bagger to center, driving in Vena with the game's first run. Noons later scored on a single to right by senior catcher Jill Raia (Montville, N.J./Morristown-Beard School).

The Falcons added a run to their lead in the fifth when sophomore right fielder Jordan Ballantyne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington HS) singled and scored on a Ram error.

Vena and Noons each had two hits for the Falcons, who finished with 10 while improving to 2-6 on the trip.

Minot took command of the first game with four wins in both the first and third innings. Winning pitcher Clarissa Ramirez (Tucson, Ariz.) supported her own cause with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Beavers went deep three times, including twice in the first inning. Junior second baseman Rachel Burdette (Temecula, Calif.) had a solo shot and freshman catcher Isis Cabral (Oxnard, Calif. had a two-run homer.

Senior shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) had an RBI double for Bentley in the first and first baseman Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem Central HS) had the same in the third.
