WALTHAM, Mass. – In the first of two games for the Falcons on Monday, Bentley University junior Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) pitched a four-hit shutout to lead her team to a 1-0 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Monday afternoon at the Bentley Field.

The second game was also a shutout but that one was thrown by Saint Anselm senior Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine). Her five-hitter carried the Hawks to a 4-0 Northeast Division victory over the Falcons.

Ferris received the only run she would need in the first after sophomore right fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) led off with a triple to left. Left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS), also a sophomore, grounded to back to the pitcher with Vena getting caught in a rundown that she extended long enough for Kennedy to advance to third. That proved to be an important move as a passed ball moments later allowed her to score the game's only run.

Two of the three hits allowed by Ferris came in the first inning and the only other safety came in the fifth. The Falcon lefty didn't issue a walk and struck out four while registering her third career shutout.

Stonehill's Sarah Ropiak (Acton) matched Ferris's three-hitter with Vena finishing with two and junior first baseman Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem Central HS) one.

Trask's shutout was her second in three days against the Falcons. She struck out eight and like Ferris, didn't issue a walk. Vena and freshman second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton/Dighton-Rehoboth HS), who had her nine-game hitting streak halted in the opener, each had two hits for Bentley.

Saint Anselm (12-3, 4-1 NE-10 Northeast) broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth. After a lead-off walk, senior third baseman Hannah Byrne (Lynn) hit an RBI triple and later scored on a ground ball. Junior first baseman Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I.) tripled and scored an insurance run in the sixth, and the Hawks added an unearned run in the seventh.

Bentley (5-10, 2-4 NE-10 Northeast) will play its next nine games on the road, beginning Wednesday at Merrimack College (3 pm).
