Assumption Strikes Early for 7-3 Win over Falcons; Gauthier Ties Bentley HR Record

WALTHAM, Mass. – A pair of extra-base hits propelled Assumption College to a 2-0 first-inning lead and the Greyhounds broke the contest open with five runs in the second as the visitors went on to a 7-3 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball at Bentley Tuesday afternoon.

Bentley, with its second straight loss, dripped to 17-16 overall and 9-8 in the Northeast, which puts the Falcons even with Stonehill in the loss column for fourth place in the division. Assumption, winners of five in a row, improved to 15-17 overall and 8-9 in the division.

The highlight for the Falcons came in the fifth when senior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/Braintree HS) homered to right, her first of the season. That gave her seven for her career, matching the school record that Deb Partridge '94 has owned for the past two decades.

Assumption's first featured a two-run double by senior right fielder Nikki Boris (Gardner) that scored freshman Cassidy Colby (Charlton), who had tripled, and junior Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I.), who reached on a walk.

The Hounds pounded out six hits in the second, including a two-run triple to center by Impagliazzo and an RBI single by Boris.

That was more than enough for freshman Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn.), who struck out four and limited the Falcons to five hits, including two by Gauthier.

Bentley picked up its final runs in the seventh inning on a two-run double by senior third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS).

Bentley will look to get back on the winning track and boost its Northeast-10 playoff chances Thursday with a 3 pm game at Saint Anselm. The regular season will conclude over the weekend with a three-game home series with St. Michael's College.
